How do Helly Tech membranes work?
Helly Tech® is the waterproof/ breathable outer layer between you and the elements. Its unique membrane stops water molecules going in, but lets moisture molecules escape. Keeping you dry from the outside and comfortable on the inside.
How Helly Tech® works
- DWR treated water-repellent outer fabric
- Waterproof and breathable membrane or coating
- Highly breathable inner fabric, mesh or lining
There are 3 Performance Levels
-> Helly Tech Professional: Extremely waterproof and breathable designs and constructions tailored to the needs of professionals. For highly aerobic, extremely wet or unusually long-lasting activities in extremely harsh conditions.
When facing the elements, you need complete confidence in your gear. Helly Tech® Professional state-of-the-art waterproof and breathable technology provides the ultimate protection from the elements. Helly Hansen is worn and trusted by more then 30,000 professional sailors, mountain guides, ski patrollers, instructors and mountain safety personnel around the world.
Waterproofness and breathability ratings typically above 20.000 mm and 20.000 g/24h/m2 respectively.
-> Helly Tech Performance: Highly waterproof and extra breathable sport specific designs and constructions. For a wide range of high performance outdoor activities during highly challenging, changing and unpredictable weather conditions.
For any outdoor activity where performance is key and water contact inevitable, the Helly Tech® Performance layer is your technical barrier against the elements. The waterproof and breathable technology moves water away from the body, keeping you dry and warm, and allowing you to perform your best.
Waterproofness and breathability ratings in the range of 10.000-20.000 and typically around 15.000 mm and 15.000 g/24h/m2 respectively.
-> Helly Tech Protection: Fully waterproof, windproof and breathable fabrics and constructions. For all situations and weather conditions where protection from the elements is needed.
For all activities in wet, cold and windy weather Helly Tech® protection is the ideal protective layer. The guaranteed waterproof and breathable technology stops water going in, but also moves moisture out, meaning you stay dry and warm regardless of the conditions.
Minimum 5.000 mm waterproofness and 5.000 g/24h/m2 breathability and typically in the range of 5.000-15.000 for both respectively.

MUSTO
1964, where it all began!
Unlike most of his contemporaries, Keith Musto was never happy to accept that being cold and wet were necessary inconveniences of sailing: “We sailed in Guernsey sweaters and old flannel trousers for years. You got wet and you accepted it. But, as we progressed up the ladder in terms of competition, we realised that this was a problem that needed to be solved. I went to one or two manufacturers who were making clothing at that time and spoke to them about improving the designs and there wasn’t a lot of interest. We soon made our minds up that although we didn’t know how to make clothing, we’d learn quicker than the manufacturers at the time could catch on to the fact that there was a need and a demand for better clothing. So we started working on what sailors really needed to make conditions better for them.”
